Some time ago I was editing my Wikipedia user page as usual. But then stopped and switch the strategy to use this page instead, because:
- It defeats my sole purpose of staying within my interest.
- I first edited articles on Wikipedia because they were not available when I was researching on some topics, but then I found myself spending time wandering on Wikipedia fixing mistakes on topics I don't follow and engaged in community activities. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't want to go down the rabbit hole. I want to use Wikipedia as a tool, as long as there's a mutual benefit modifying the tool and gain personal knowledge. But leaving all self interest and shifting life purpose to building Wikipedia is a choice I don't want to make. This external user page is a reminder that there's much more than the Wikipedia pocket universe.
- Solely editing user page is considered "not here to build an encyclopedia". Indeed, it violates many thing within the guideline, including:
- Editing only in user space (Straight forward. Of course I can spend most time editing my user page and occasionally make a few edits, but this brings no real benefits.)
- Little or no interest in working collaboratively (When I finish my edits, I don't care about it anymore, I don't care if they modify it, vandalize it, break neutrality, etc. If there's a conflict, I'm out, they're the daddies. I don't want to defend anything, it's a collaborative encyclopedia, not my thesis. I've got what I want, if they don't like it just delete it. I don't own the article, only the edit, which I've already released under free license. Am I obligated to help anyone who asked?)
- Narrow self-interest
- Everything I made appears in the change log and the revision history never disappears from the Internet, even when I make subtle edits.
- I appreciate the transparency, but I don't want to be annoying to the patrollers flooding the recent changes page with >300 edits on my user page every day. I don't want people bother putting effort checking my typos to make sure they're not disruptive to the project. In fact, I've saw someone got warned making too much edits on their user page. I'm not sure whether this is expected but I'm a snowflake and easily got butthurt, especially being treated like a criminal grooming my profile. I just want to avoid conflicts, so here's it is, an external user page.
